Current Events

After reviewing Current Event #1, we need to go over some MAJOR Grammatical and Usage Errors that continue to occur in our writing.

1. Begin your summaries as follows

According to ________________________ (Author's Name) in the ________ (article, book, video, etc) entitled _________________________________________, ... (State the claim OR main idea).

2. Commas

3. Avoid pronouns, especially the pronoun YOU.

4. You must write complete, comprehend-able sentences that your audience can easily understand.
---Conciseness is better.
---Write simple sentences.
---READ your work BEFORE you turn it in!

5. Label each Part of the Current Event

Part 1: MLA 8th edition Citation
---must be punctuated correctly
---use the MLA formula to correct your work

Author’s last name, author’s first name. “Title”. Publisher (italics), publication date, page numbers/url.

Part 2: Summary of source
--- At least 5-10 sentences with in text citations that can be used in your research essay

Part 3: Inferences and claims about the topic
---Complete paragraph with at least 5 sentences






*To collect credible sources and to practice summarization skills, students will keep a Current Event Journal where they collect published articles/ sources about their research topic. Sources must be published within the years 2010-present. Students must cite the article in MLA, summarize the article, and create one original claim from analyzing the article.
